Coupons would substantially bring down the cost of dog treats - you know, a staple in our household. Aboard, there is not an abundance of space to keep stockpiles of groceries (and dog treats), so we've gone back to buying a box at a time.

Yet, I realized that we likely had the ingredients aboard to make easy treats so one Saturday I gave them a try. Success! I found an easy dog treat recipe with a basic Google search, and I learned that making treats aboard not only makes my dog happy and saves money, but it also uses up some of the staples we always have - flour, for one.
It makes sense. In our locality, January and February (sometimes, March too) is really cold. This year, we've survived the Polar Vortex and an overnight snowstorm that closed our local schools for one week. Through it all, we do keep warm due to planning and patience.

In the fall, my husband installed a propane heater. We hardly use the fold-up table that was installed in our boat, so my husband used it as a secure backdrop for the marine heater. The propane tank is kept outside on the port side deck, and the heater was installed with a vent for fumes, etc. to escape the boat.

A nice stream of heat blows out of the heater, and it's been a wonderful addition to our boat during this winter. And, it's really cozy to lay in our aft cabin and see the reflection of the flickering flames overhead in the saloon.

In addition, we have a few small heaters that are strategically placed on the floor, as we use those as needed. Also, we have a wonderful heated blanket that we turn on before we go to bed so the sheets are warm when we snuggle in - we have found that our dog LOVES going to bed, and he's often in the rack hours before us. Around 7 PM, he hops off the couch, shakes, and then heads to the aft cabin. He stands there until we turn on the blanket, and help him hop up into bed (he's very skiddish about leaping as his paws sometimes slip on the wood floor). A spolied dog, we know. After an hour or so of us sleeping, one of us usually wakes up and turns off the heated blanket and we sleep warmly and soundly until the morning.

Going outside is what's cold for us. We love hearing the weather raging outside or seeing the evidence of how cold is is, while we are toasty warm inside the boat. When we lived on land, we often talked about how weather could happen outside without us knowing it. Being back aboard puts us back into the mix and we are part of the weather each day. We see this is a blessing and having a stronger connection with the world in which we live.

Below are some shots from the recent freeze. Hope you all area staying warm, too.
My brother recently bought an adorable house, so my husband, pooch, and I decided to make our home base here. Not only am I incredibly impressed with my little brother's decorating skills (who knew?!?), but he has been an absolutely great host, and having Christmas here with our entire family was a blast.

Was so happy that my little brother had a Christmas tree up and ready for our arrival.

My husband said that this stress-free week made this the best Christmas he ever had, and he also praised the loveliness of the indoor plumbing system (i.e., shower and toilet). When you live aboard, these land-lubber everyday conveniences are a special treat. As is being able to let the dog out in the morning to run around in the backyard on his own, making a quick cup of coffee, a dishwasher, a big tv with cable, etc. The biggest treat, though, is just being able to spend time with family which doesn't happen often enough.

Hoping that you all had a wonderful holiday and with continue to do so through the New Year. Best wishes!
It's so funny - it made me think of how often I do drape my arms over our shelves in our aft cabin. In a house bed, I don't know what to do with all of the space! Enjoy : )
Walmart had a great deal on a Canon digital camera, and I bit the bait. It was a really great deal but it did not come with a case. I love the tutorial over at Scattered Thoughts of a Crafty Mom for the easy quilted case, and it turned out pretty well.

I was able to use up some of the scrap material left over from my holiday pillow covers and I used a towel I found in the boat. No longer do I keep batting around because I don't have space; the towel and fabric was pretty thick to sew through, so I put on the quilting foot so my sewing machine could make it's way through the multiple layers. If I made this again, I would make the little elastic shorter (my button had to be way down on case, not cute and in the middle of the front). But, I'm happy with the outcome, and it will keep this new camera safe while we are at or away from the dock.

Our good friends aboard S/V Last Tango put me to shame last year during the holiday season. Their interior was so nicely and simply decorated for Christmas that it almost made tears come to my eyes. Our crew of friends were all headed off in different directions for the holidays, so Last Tango hosted a pre-Christmas dinner and get-together. Twinkle lights were twinkling, Christmas music was singing, cards adorned the cabin... all things that were so nice and reminded me of home. In the time since then, I decided that I would do some little things to make our boat feel more decorated for the holidays, but still remain committed to only bringing aboard what can be used/enjoyed each day, has a place to be stored, and doesn't have glitter. (Not sure if this is a rule for all liveaboards, but it is in our boat - our captain despises glitter.) For example, I've hung ribbon on our aft cabin door so we can tie and hang our Christmas cards. My absolutely adorable nieces are featured below, because their mother is so on-the-holiday-ball that she's already sent out her Christmas cards (and I love her for that and more).

So today, in the time it took to watch the movie, You've Got Mail, I was able to complete three easy pillow covers for our non-Christmasy pillows. I had awesome coupons to Joann's Fabrics this week, so the overly expensive indoor/outdoor fabric ($19.99/yard - what?!?) became mine for 60 and 50 percent off. Nice! I liked the selected fabric because it had holiday colors and a bit of blue to match our interior fabric. We'll be able to use the covers far into the winter (meets one of our rules....) and as you'll see below, there's already proof that the pillows will be used daily.

I like (and have used for t-shirt pillows, for Hospice families) the easy directions from the Southern Institute for making pillow covers. You can make these for any sizes of pillows and you can make covers for all seasons and make those decorating changes in a nice simple way. Pillow covers can be folded up, as well, and stored easily (meets another rule...) I'll likely make some new ones in February for the end of winter, and some new ones in spring. I'm excited to cover the pillows we currently have; they are nice, but need a fresh look.

I'll share a bit of the steps, below; but, I really do suggest you check out the Southern Institute's blog for more specific directions. And, these are so easy that any beginner (or "never done a project") sewer can do.
I Googled destinations on the Chesapeake Bay, and this led me to discovering Onancock, VA - a place that has become one of our favorite cruising destinations. Onancock sits at the end of Onancock Creek, on the lower Eastern Shore of Virginia. The town is charming, friendly, quaint, and always provides a backdrop for a lovely, relaxing getaway.

We highly recommend the restaurant at the wharf, Mallard's, and if you're able to hang out for live music with their musical chef, Johnny Mo, you're in for a treat. Just make sure that you do not partake in any free shots should they be giving them away. I think the ones we welcomed (multiple times) were called kamikazes, and the name is not a coincidence. I think I walked into a fly trap that night....

I find that recipes just do not turn out well for me, however much my husband praises the dishes. Truth is, I think I'm a pickier eater than he being that he ate raw cookie dough for breakfast the other morning. "Why did you do that?" I asked. "Because I was hungry," he said.

Then, I found this white chicken chili from a super great blog, Gimme Some Oven. Using salsa verde for the kick, this was an easy and oh-so-good recipe that I'll be making many times this season. I used the two cans of white beans that I had on hand, and they were great (butter beans and navy beans). Suggested by my sister-in-law, the Archer Farms salsa verde (sold at Target) was a perfect fit with this chili. Leftovers were great over plain rice. Enjoy!
White Chicken Chili
Adapted from recipe at Gimme Some Oven

Ingredients
2 cups chicken broth
4 cups cooked shredded chicken
2 (15-oz) cans white beans, drained (navy beans and butter beans did well)
3 cups salsa verde (rec. the Archer Farms brand at Target)
2 tsp. ground cumin
2 tsp. cornstartch

1. Marinate chicken in 1 cup, or so, of salsa verde until ready to cook. Suggested, a few hours.

2. Bake marinated chicken at 350 degrees until internal temperature is 160 degrees. Approximately, 25-30 minutes.

3. Shread cooked chicken.

4. Add cornstartch to chicken broth and mix well.

5. Add chicken broth mix, chicken, beans, remaining salsa verde and cumin to a saucepan, and stir. Heat until the chili mixture boils and cover. Turn down heat and let simmer for at least five minutes.

6. Top with any desired toppings and enjoy!the Liveaboard Wifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16429023942622548907noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7362539326077286396.post-61853895741977599202013-08-29T05:49:00.002-07:002013-12-04T10:07:35.208-08:00Storing Jewelry AboardOne consideration when living aboard is that my home always moves. Everything needs to be stored in a place where slight movements will not cause damage. I remember being at a home decor party and the hostess was encouraging (okay, she was pestering) me about entering a contest for a beautiful glass vase. I politely declined, changed the direction of the conversation, and ignored her many times with a smile. Eventually, after another push to buy something, I told her that lived on a boat, and glass vases and boats do not go together. Everyone laughed, and the party moved on. Anything we buy is of a material that will not likely break and requires very little "checking-on".

Some items require a bit of organizational planning, like jewelry. The best way, I've found, to store my jewels, rings, and earrings, is to use a cross stitch thread box. Each of the little square areas is perfect for the jewelry I keep. Rings can go in one, a necklace in another, earrings in a third... And, the top of the case closes tightly so even if I store the box on it's side, the jewelry doesn't shift out of it's compartment. Additionally, traveling is easy because I can just take the entire box with me (regardless if I'm going to use everything or not). It's a really easy and clean way to store jewelry.
Yet, it wasn't until I finally purchased the Boat Galley's Cookbook, that I learned that adding a bit of baking powder to the egg mix creates a fluffy, wonderful breakfast. Not sure if you knew this, and if not, here's my adaptation of the Boat Galley's reccomended scrambled eggs. (Which are captain-approved.)
Scrambled Eggs for One
Adapted from The Boat Galley Cookbook

1 egg + 2 egg whites
1 tbsp cold water
A pinch of baking powder
salt
pepper
teaspoon of cooking oil
Optional: toppings (see below)

1. Whisk together all above ingredients in a bowl.

2. If using optional cheese, add cheese into egg mixture.

3. Add the oil to a cooking pan on the stove, and over medium heat allow oil to warm.

4. Once a few drops of water "dance" in the oil, add in any optional meat or add-ins that you like and cook for a few minutes.

5. Add to the pan the egg mixture, and stir regularly - moving around the cooked egg and what still needs to be cooked.

6. When all egg mixture is fluffy and cooked, serve hot.

Optional add-ins that we enjoy:

Ham and cheese (any cheese is good with ham)

Ham, sundried tomatoes and feta cheese

The sky was clear, the breeze brisk, and the feel of morning surrounded me so nicely. There's something great about being up before everyone else and noticing how the earth looks before it's been touched by human life. Nature abounds and calls out - it's really wonderful and peaceful.

Now that it's summer, the boat gradually pulls in light from the morning sun beginning at about 5 AM which wakes the pooch and then consequently the pooch wakes me. If I'm not already stirring, the sound of the dog's claws tapping on the floorboards (as he walks in circles) definitely does. I think he's learned that his paws make noise and noise wakes up his humans. With school out for the summer, the husband and I have been sleeping in until 6 AM as our summer schedule has adjusted; but, since laundry was on this morning's eagenda, I crawled out of bed with the first sign on daylight. After what occured throughout the morning, I'm really happy that I did.

The night before, I exchanged a crisp $10 bill for a roll of quarters at the grocery store and absent-mindedly left the money in the car. My husband used the car to drive over to his parents' house to do some air conditioning work, and without quarters my laundry plan was kaput. When I noticed my lapse in planning, it was already 5 pm, and I knew that doing laundry at 8 PM or later was going to prevent other important things from getting done (i.e., evening relaxing). I decided to get up early the next morning and begin laundry in the midst of doing my every morning tasks: walking the dog, making breakfast, getting showered at the bath house. Laundry would be a fine fit as I'd already be up and outside.

When I started to pull clothes out of the dryer to fold, I was alone and decided that I would about leave four quarters ready-to-go in the dryer so the next person to come into the laundry room would have a pleasant surprise. I had plenty of quarters on this trip, so four less would be nice for someone else and not take too much away from me. I noticed that a bag lay on top of the washing machine and I assumed that someone had washed some clothes and would be drying. The quarters for drying would be needed.

The owner of the bag walked into the laundry room a few moments later wearing a nice red mesh polo shirt (which resembles the gifts our good liveaboard friends made for us this spring). We said hello and he inquired about the laundry machines - specifically how they accepted money. "Quarters," I replied and noticed a bummer-type expression on his face. "Do you need quarters?" I asked, to which he replied with a smile and an affirmative nod. He hadn't begun the wash yet because the machines didn't take dollar bills.

I gave to him the $2.75 in quarters that it costs to complete a full wash and dry, and as boaters do, we discussed the common get-to-know-you-politely talk that is common: From where are you visiting? What type of boat do you have? You live aboard? I learned that this man and another friend were sailing their two sailboats on a three-week excursion, following the narrative of an explorer who did the same course 150 years ago. The crews planned on comparing the explorer's descriptions to what they would find during their trip. The plan is to examine the specific places that were included in the observations (which are in a published book) and capture photographic evidence of the changes as well as what has remained the same. There wasn't any indication or information that suggested that this man was on a professional trip - this is for fun and to satisfy personal curiosity. I think it's such a great idea.

It's also interesting to me that my laundry plan for yesterday did not work out at all, and my intention to share quarters with another manifested in a very different and wonderful way. Not only was I able to still share (and in a better way since the sailor I met needed not only four but additional quarters for the washing machine), but I also gained a great idea for the cruising that my husband and I can do together. Not only will we sail and appreciate the beauty of the landscape in which we live, but we can incorporate seeing the land and water through eyes that viewed it long before us. A connection between present and past is a valuable experience to have - as is, as I now realize, doing laundry in the morning.the Liveaboard Wifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16429023942622548907noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7362539326077286396.post-29632468072222475832013-06-03T07:21:00.002-07:002013-06-03T07:21:39.498-07:00CrittersOne of my favorite things about liveaboard life is the wildlife we have surrounding us daily. I'm a sucker for cute animals and the bunnies, mama ducks and her ducklings, and Mr. Muskrat swimming on his back are too cute to explain. We have herons, ospreys, and squirrels in our daily view, as well.

Yet, I also forget that we are also surrounded by not so cute-and-cuddly critters - like the big black snake coiled around one of our pier boards last week. Just the sight of him makes me shriek and jump back a few paces. I respect snakes and their role, but I prefer to be far far away from them (or not know that they are around me). This snake was hiding out eating some eggs underneath the pier, and at one point poked his head up through the pier boards just as I was coming down the dock. At hearing my yelp, hubby jumped off the boat to find the snake.... and hold it?!?

My husband is a critter-catcher, and he has a fine history of scooping up snakes and admiring them. Me, I prefer to run and hide (or in this case, hop on the boat and grab a camera). This one was a big one, not agressive (as I'm told are all black snakes), but was more than happy to slither out of my hubby's grips and head back into the water where he belongs.
Hopefully, he'll enjoy being in the water so much that he'll avoid heading back to our pier. Our liveaboard life consists of us working during the week and sailing on the weekends (as time and weather allows) so we have wonderful access to good food. I can stop into our local store to find organic meat and produce and purchase this for our getaways. Each week, I look at our local store's flyer to see what's on sale and then plan our meals around those items. This week, grass-fed organic ground beef was on sale so I thought, why not burgers as we hardly ever make them. It was a good choice - we grilled some blue cheese burgers after sailing all day and finding a good place to anchor. They went nicely with some white wine and a sunset : )
Even with almost seven years of experience aboard, the skills, terminology, swiftness, and confidence (among many other things) hasn't evolved. Some may have an opinion that I haven't worked hard enough to learn; and, while I agree somewhat (especially in the first go-round that we lived aboard), I can see now that sailing is one area where I have a lot to learn... and it's proving to be really hard.

Throughout my early life, I was a whiz at everything - school, friends, sports, work. All the way through my first career, I soared at everything that I did and received praise and accolades regularly. Then, I let my life take a different turn, and I made some different decisions about my paths; I purposely led myself down some roads that weren't so familliar, safe, and easy. These new and different roads strayed me far from the comfort I had previously known. Today, I can see that these changes needed to happen in order to show me places where I really wasn't capable or amazing (imagine that...) Life for me really hadn't been challenging up to that point and by living aboard and changing careers, it really shook up my confidence as well as my ego.

When I mess up (sailing, or otherwise), I get really angry - at myself, the situation, at others. A Psychology 101 course will teach that this anger really is a fear of being seen incompotent; and that's right in my case. As any other normal human being, I don't like feeling that I'm being seen as not smart or capable of doing a good job. It's difficult for me to admit when I don't know how to do something and even worse to admit when I've tried and horribly failed (especially if it negatively has an effect on others). If a good friend was sharing these feelings with me of course I'd say, "If you don't know and you do your best, you can't be upset at yourself. Trying and learning from it is what's important." What great advice, right? If only I'd truly use it on myself!

When I sail with my husband, a mirror goes along. I too clearly see my imperfections, reactions, and deficits, very clearly. Sailing shows me where I can grow - not only in skills but also personally. I am becoming better at dealing with messing up, not being perfect, and being embarrassed. I am working hard to just relax and learn (instead of being irritated or angry). There's a lot of self-talk occuring when I sail and that in itself can be exhausting. If you asked me to plan an entire unit on how to teach grammar, get kids to read real books, decrease the number of disciplinary referrals at a middle school - I'm your girl and will have it done within an hour. But, taking in an applying all that I need to know to be a successful sailor (and soothing myself when I miserably fail) - it's taking a bit longer than I would like.

If I had to advise young students on learning to read or parents concerned about their children's behavior, I'd tell them to let things happen little by litte. I know from being a teacher that to learn, new material needs to be able to attach itself to something already known. And, it needs to be accessed, used, and applied several times over before the knowledge becomes automatic. Now that I'm fully invested in learning to sail and want to live aboard for many years to come, I'm working on building my foundation so more knowledge can grow. I'm reviewing names of lines in my head, asking questions even if that information isn't immediately neccessary, really watching and thinking about what the more experienced sailors are doing and why. That's the best that I can do right now, and I'm so incredibly lucky to have a very patient, loving, and understanding husband/captain who is working with me. To others, it may not seem this way but I am really trying and I know that eventually, I'll become more of an asset on a sail - not just a participant.

This weekend as we brought our boat back to the slip from being anchored out overnight, I did grab the wrong line when working to release our genoa, did almost miss grabbing our bow lines from a piling, and used many terms incorrectly and had to be corrected. However, I did automatically steer our boat by the correct side of the red markers leaving our anchorage, used the terms starboard and port correctly, and handled the boat well at the helm in 27 kt winds that were almost overpowering. I also noticed that I did not get sweaty palms or feel my heart racing as we worked to anchor our boat or dock her in the slip - this is a BIG improvement for me. I'm proud of what went right, and I did learn from what could have been better. It always means a lot to me when my husband praises what I did well, but even if he doesn't, I am more confident now that all come together for me. I just have to be okay with it being little by litte.
This is important with clothing items especially because one (me) can end up with a gazillion tshirts or pants that sit too long in the locker and end up soaking up a boat-y smell because they've not been worn or cleaned in a good amount of time. The above rule is helpful, too, in making sure that we truly have what we need and really consider those things we want (not all wants are needs).

Books are items that I've had to be a bit more conscious about bringing aboard. I'll amass a small library in no time. Buying books full price from a book store or Amazon isn't always the best use of money because I read and get rid - after a book is done it's passed off to a friend, the local library, or taken to the Goodwill. These places are also where I find books - the Goodwill is a goldmine. Recently I was in a larger town nearby waiting for our new sail to be completed, so I stopped into their Goodwill store. It's bigger, it's near an affluent community, so there were treasures to be found...especially the book section.

Five front and back bookcases of newly used books by current and prominent authors. I ended up with nine books in my arms and then realized that this was crazy. I ended up choosing three: one non-fiction, one fiction, and one self-helpy (I like learning new ways to think and react). Inside two of the books, there were messages left behind by previous readers.

In one, a sweet note from a husband.
It took me a while to figure this message out (embarrassingly so, in hindsight). Not sure how or why this arrived in my world, but I'll take it. I chuckle a bit when I imagine that the universe had delivered in my lap something that we all search long and hard for. Literally, good books are filled with grand ideas. the Liveaboard Wifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16429023942622548907noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7362539326077286396.post-12823284166971628812013-05-01T05:31:00.000-07:002013-05-01T05:31:00.578-07:00Another thought on social mediaContinuing thoughts about social media and being authentically connected, of course the universe brought a new article to my blog feed: Does social media make you antisocial? The author of the article cites examples of how a typical (I'll stereotype and say, American) will most likely pull back from a stranger who spontaneously grabs a hand instead of lingering and wondering about the possible connection being shared. We are more likely to assume harm before we assume goodness. Even in our local school district, a recent board meeting stirred the community when they suggested that school volunteers be prohibited from giving (or recieving) hugs from elementary students.

Although I don't want or need strangers to grab my hand, I see the point of the author's purpose. Around me, I see my community as one that will assume a negative before assuming an action or event is positive. As I read the above article, I thought of one of my favorite teachers/authors, Leo Buscaglia, who would go up to strangers on the street and hug them. Leo also started a class all about Love at a California university just so students could learn more about love and loving (it's an action, you know). His writing and stories bring me to tears because they are so incredibly full of love. It's rare to witness or feel the kindless and lovingness that he shares in his work and words.

I recognize that my main connection to friends and family that live far away is via social media. I do enjoy seeing pictures of family and friends on Facebook (FB) and reading and responding to posts, but solely connecting in this way lacks an authenticness. I've noticed that a long phone conversation now drains me so I'm more apt to send a text, an email, or send a FB message. It's easier and it's quicker - but, it's also less meaningful. Tone, genuineness, and other affective components are not heard in an email. And, I can't hug, hold a hand, or just smile at someone via the internet; those things are really what we (okay, what I) need most today. I've grown accustomed to connecting in a quick way, but it's not the best way. I just need to find balance.the Liveaboard Wifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16429023942622548907noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7362539326077286396.post-30192371300670090852013-04-29T10:45:00.003-07:002013-04-29T10:45:33.193-07:00The illusion of social media? I heard the below quote this past weekend on NPR. It made me reflect on some of the feelings I've had lately with being so connected.

Social media is the "...Illusion of companionship without the demands of intimacy, we confuse postings and online sharing with authentic communication".

What do you think of this quote by Sherry Turkle? When on Facebook, Twitter, etc., are we trading in authentic communication and connection for superficial companionship? I look forward to reading your thoughts.
I've had many pieces of clothing fail because they weren't up to the challenge of liveaboard life; so, the idea of refashioning clothing from the thrift shop has attracted my attention.

I've always loved shopping at thrift stores and have had success finding great deals on brand new or barely worn clothing. Yet, refashioning means that I can take pieces (in whatever size, shape, or style) and make them work for me. Also, I can't bring myself to buy clothing at the prices that most pieces are marked, especially when I'm not sure if they'll hold up in the wash, or collect wrinkles when put away on a shelf in my clothing storage locker.

So, refashion. With the help of Ruffles and Stuff, I've completed the first refashion of a dress, just in time for the dinner dance I am attending next weekend. With a nice cardigan and some (plastic) jewels, I think this dress will work.

For this dress, I did the sewing with the dress turned inside-out. I sewed along the side seams just about an inch to bring in the sides. Then, I did sewing along the tops of each shoulder down about an inch, as well. I cut off the excess, tried on the dress, and then decided where I wanted to place the elastic around my waist. I traced a straight line (on the inside-out side of the dress) with fabric pencil to show where I needed the elastic, then did the sewing. Pulling the elastic slightly while sewing along the traced line allowed the fabric to gather. I cut off the excess elastic, left the length of the dress alone, and tried it on (which you see above).

Not too bad for a first try, I think. And the cost of this dress was about $10 ($4 for the dress, $3 for the thread, and $3 for a pack of elastic (of which a lot is left)). Much better than a department store purchase and with some accessorizin' hopefully this will be fun to wear.

Sleeping in? Doesn't exist for me. I have a dog who likes to take me for walks on the weekends; today

our paws were on the ground at 6:45 am. We start in the boat yard, sniffing around, and then head out to the main road. It's funny because every morning the sights are the same, but watching how my dog sniffs and behaves, it's like he's seeing new things each time. Such is why he's so excited to get up and outside each morning. And, as tough as it is some mornings to hop out of bed and start the day, taking our one-mile neighborhood walk is something that I never regret; as the dog does, I get a lot out of being outside before everyone else. I am lucky to live in such a beautiful and peaceful place.

Our neighbors have daffodils that bloom on schedule each spring. I think the dog would just lay right down in the middle of them, if he could.
On the corner, there's the remnants of the old neighborhood post office. Our area used to be bustling with business and activity all centered on what the water provided - crabs, oysters, fish. Although we still have a few restaurants (and the marina where we live), the big business has left and local waterman and their charter boats remain.

We walk on and enjoy the quietness of the morning, the crispness of spring air, and the little bit of warmth the sun gives. On our way back in the marina, it's cool to notice the spring presence of the ospreys. They have placed their nests in highest spots, and we've been able to see them flying with large sticks and branches in their clutch, collecting pieces for the home they make for spring babies. One nest, each year, is in the center of the marina crane (which cannot move because of the nest), and all over in the trees we'll see the watchers - day and night.

I settle in to the boat and make breakfast and some coffee then cover up with my quilt and hop online to catch up and complete some online class work. Eddie, our dog, stays outside in the cockpit and remains part of the morning crowd - the bird screeches and chirps are constant until late morning and our neighbors begin to move about on and off their boats. Spring means leaving the hatch doors open so I can be part of it too, and at this point I'm thankful that my dog knows how much I need the early morning walks - they truly do soothe my soul and help me to be incredibly thankful for this type of life I've been given. I wish you all the same this weekend.

We both agreed on this plan a few weeks ago. Where we live, the end of June through early August, has been incredibly humid, hot, and buggy. It's not optimal sailing / anchoring out weather, so we have really been looking forward to spring weather so we can really enjoy this life we've come back to. Our <strike>measly</strike> income tax return would buy a new sail (the original that came with the boat was beyond repair) and we'd be shoving off.

But, we discovered that our fuel tank was leaking. This problem stinks - literally and figuratively. See the line of fluid running out of the tank - that's the trail diesel fuel was taking inside our boat.

In the pic, that's water coming out of the tank. We siphoned out five jugs of fuel out before removing the tank.

So, while we wait for a new fuel tank to be made, we've been living at the dock - grilling out, spending time in the cockpit with friends, and enjoying the sunsets we can see from shore. Although we'd like to be out and about, we've decided that being on a broken boat is better than no boat at all. Below are some of the shots from our two weeks dock-locked.

Been grilling out a lot....

You'll see our "marina dog" waiting on our neighbor's finger pier for a sight of what they're cooking in their grill....

You know you're comfy on your boat when you wear these outside....

1. Whisk together all dry ingredients. Make a well in the center of the mix, and pour in the wet ingredients.

2. Whisk all together very well, until smooth.

3. Heat griddle or cooking pan over medium heat with a little bit of butter (or cooking spray) and use 1/4 cup to scoop out pancake mix. Place on griddle or pan and let cook until tops are bubbly.

4. Flip and continue to cook until done. Serve with butter, syrup, and maybe some fresh spring fruit.

5. Enjoy!
One of my favorite reminders is one from Suze Orman - "People first, money second, and things last". As much as I pride myself on being a somewhat advanced (per my own designation) spiritual person, when I open up the cupboard on a Saturday morning when the dog wanted a walk at 0630, not having coffee in the cabinet really puts my spiritual ego in check.

So on goes the bra, the jeans, I wash my face and brush my teeth. It's up into town I go. Do I really need coffee? No, I don't need it, but this morning my wanting was so bad that it became as close to a need as possible. It is interesting how we notice how much we enjoy things when we don't have them, and we realize how dependent we actually are (subsitute the "we's" in the sentence with "I's").
And, now, being here with you (computer) sipping my sweet Starbucks via coffee, I'm back to my simple, nature-inspired self. I'm happy that I did make the trip, though, as our local farmer's market is now open on Saturdays. I was able to pick up some local meats (I chose the goat burger and some beef sweet sausages) that I can use in dinners this week, and I found some homemade soap that I will enjoy during my morning showers. In one of my last Green Grab Bags, I was given some natural vanilla soap and I really loved it. In the past, I've always showered with liquid soap and a "poof", but trying the bar soap was lovely, and I'm excited to have something new to use.
Ah, so that's my morning. Hope you can relax and enjoy your weekend and haven't also run out of anything that is more important than you realize. Wishing you a wonderful Saturday.the Liveaboard Wifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16429023942622548907noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7362539326077286396.post-87613972493212468622013-04-20T07:18:00.002-07:002013-04-20T07:18:37.795-07:00Weather One of the most common questions for a liveaboard is, "What do you do when storms come?" Just as one would do when living on land, we secure anything that might blow away, make sure that the dwelling is closed up, and we get inside just before the storm hits (as we've been outside watching it's approach for a while).

Last night was the second time since we've been back aboard that a big storm traveled over us. Just as I did when I was a little girl, I watched for a while the sky darken, the lightning in the distance, and stood up outside in the big gusts of cool wind that raced through our part of the marina. For me, there's something so incredible about the power and size of a big storm; maybe I realize my small presence and consequently, the small-ness of my issues, problems, and worries? I may subconciously recognize that there are forces larger than life?

Whatever it is, I'm in awe of storms and being aboard during one is an experience. One of my favorite aspects of life aboard is how we always know and can feel the presence of the weather outside. We really are right in the middle of whatever is happening, and that's pretty cool. This makes me feel so connected to nature, and with that comes a responsibility to pay more attention to the weather, and prepare accordingly.

When we answer the question, "What do you do when...", we're able to give a simple answer because it really is similar to having a house. We put away what can blow away, my husband secures our dwelling (that includes tightening up or doubling the lines that hold us to the pier), and then we stand outside until the last possible moment. Inside, we cuddle up, watch a movie, and get rocked to sleep. It's great.the Liveaboard Wifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16429023942622548907noreply@blogger.com0
